"schminki 1,2 + 3"
Vienna 1998, 8 min.
music: Marcin Stelmaszczyk, Oliver Stotz

Not only since Paris is Burning have images of make-op rituals been closley connected with the question of the dominating gender norms, because the act of putting on make-up seveals simultaneously the making of bodies. Putting on lipstick seems to directly go along with the crossing of the legs, i.e. a multitude of supposedly "female" identifiable poses. The performative character is inherent in such images because the construction of the gender is being revealed. In schminki 1, 2 + 3 a woman is putting on make-up. A woman, disguised as a woman, exhibits images of her own creation. Individual image-photographs follow each other, but not in chronological sequence. The poses, respectively their identifiability, precede the images, and the aesthetic operation clarifies the construction. Rukschcio creates a parody of the prevailing norms by trying to reveal the imitative structure of gender norms. Images of hegemonial gender discourses to which the title refers, are to be questioned in the parody.

"Things change/ Things don't change"
F/A 2009, 5:12 min.
voice: Josef Wenzel Hnatek

In the history of spelling which originated with the introduction of the telefone, it reveals that this does not stand as a neutral transmission for itself. The change of a political system has a direct influence on the system of communication. With the rise of Social Nationalism, spelling, this basic tool for overcoming difficulties in communication, was also altered: Jewish names were changed into German names for "ease of communication", became therefor charged with national and ethnic ideologies, which till today. The spelling of "Things change" can therefore be seen as a questioning and challange, which alternates with the ambivalence of "Things don't change".

Amongst new collages, the film "Gaspard Ziegler, Portrait with a Watch" (F/A 2008/10, 28 min, music: uko) is shown, simultaneous with the "Diagonale" end of March 2011.

Who am I? - A portrait of Gaspard Ziegler as a catalyst to research resemblance and its functions in finding her own identity.
The daguerreotype of 1841 showing her look-alike Gaspard Ziegler, who lived 1824-1889 in Mulhouse, inspired Fiona Rukschcio to trace the peculiarity of existence. Her quest led her to scientists, relatives of Ziegler and parasciences.

Further, a so far never shown videowork from 2003 will be presented:
"Un jour comme un autre"

Stills, Un jour comme un autre, 2003, music: Yuji Yasunaga

Between sunrise and sunset monologues unfold that Fiona Rukschcio has her protagonists in her video "Un jour comme un autre" say in French.
People of different ages express their thoughts that the artist attributes to them concerning everyday life and death. In a double projection individuals appear, generally by themselves, in front of a stage-like backdrop; they recite their text one after another. Vague relationships between some persons become apparent – they seem to communicate, an impression reinforced by the fact that there seem to be connections in content between individual monologues, which become apparent in the double projection.

A fragile and surreal atmosphere is being created: the characters develop their train of thoughts, in which existential questions and expectations smoothly lead to an expression of everyday needs.

(...) Fiona Rukschcio leaves her protagonists isolated by foregoing musical support spezial effects. The characters are not linked to the person, but rather to the content of the text they narrate. Due to the double projection, correspondences and divergencies are discernible and create an indirect communication between the various persons that implies closeness and/or distance.
Like stranded peoplethe actors search for a sense of orientation and identity. They move at different levels: isolation can be sensed in those shots where the individual people free themselves in reflexive rebellion, or withdraw in meditiation. The only link that exists between the protagonists is he common philosophical determinator created by the use of the conjunctive as a postponed or ficticious promise.

PUBLIC ART SCREENING - Films of, about and with Art related to Lower Austria

Three films are presented which were independently created in the context of Art in Public Space of Lower Austria.

still from: "Im Ernstfall ist alles anders", A 2006, 33 min.

The film "Im Notfall ist alles anders" was created in the course of a competition regarding the design of a square in front ot the fire brigade school in Tulln. During her research, Fiona Rukschcio found a note by Maria Lehner, a former fire brigade helper. She also had conversations with Maria Auli, who was recruited together with Mrs. Lehner for Auxiliary Service during the Second World War.

In the summer of 2007, Julius Deutschbauer and Gerhard Spring created a film about the refugee drama at the Lunzer See and talked to refugees, facilitators and police forces.

The final film on show will be "Parcours" by Catrin Bolt, which was created in the park of Castle Grafenegg. In the spring of 2011, the film will be shown in the "Eiskeller" of the castle.

The title of the exhibition Figure/Ground serves as a loose binding between the artworks on view. There is a direct connection with the ‘collage’ works of Fiona Rukschcio, where headless figures stand in raw designed neon yellow landscapes, the individual in the width of the civilisated space. A during longer time realised eight meter long work connects diarylike notes, cut out from newspapers and magazines, plus texts and drawings to a frieze about consumption culture and love life.

You will see phantasms, visions, phantasies, fetishisms, erotic supports, memory hooks...what is displayed in bedrooms as erotic, and what in a public space like the Café? And maybe answers to the questions: are studies of the nude inevitably erotic and what is eroticism in the eyes of the artists, so that they want to deal with it in this exhibition? How subjective is the term eroticism and where does it come from and how is it used? What about the dictus of what is so called erotic with women and with men and if this is so due to which interests, what role plays the heterosexual matrix and which individual aspects might there be?....and so on..

Le portrait à la montre, Avant-premiere in Mulhouse

Who was Gaspard Ziegler? – Following the foot steps of my look-alike, who lived in Mulhouse from 1824 to 1889, I started my research with a daguerreotype, I discovered ten years ago in a book. In the process, I met Joel Delaine, Director of the Musée historique de Mulhouse, whose collection holds the picture, Marie-Claire Vitoux, professor of History at the University of Mulhouse, Eliane Michelon, Director of the Archive municipale, Patrick Perrot, who is a scientist with Wartsila (successor organisation of SACM, for which Gaspard Ziegler previously worked), two relatives of Gaspard Ziegler and many more. Also, a numerologist and a past-life therapist were contacted, to approach the phaenomenon of resemblance. Angela Krippl tied the loose ends together in her statement: "Generally speaking, you are dealing with the question Who am I? - Which was stimulated in your case by the very picture.“

Collage in general is an approach of art practice where a knowledge of pure technique is not necessarily needed. This also suggests that there is no "right" and "wrong" way of working in collage. This openess provides the philosophy for the workshop and should stand at the starting point of the workshop. The task will be for each participant to find his/her own way towards collage, which you can only find in doing.
